The Role Of Intellectual Property In The Success Of A Company

Intellectual property is of four types, and each one is indispensable for a company as it brings in profit by giving the company an advantage over its competitors in the market.
A trademark distinguishes a company from its market rivals. If your item carries a trademark, you can attract customers as your brand gets an identity and is held as a trustworthy brand. A registered trademark cannot be misused, and it gives a company the right to sue another company for unlawful use of its logo.
A patent is essential because good inventions usually are commercially viable. Therefore, if your invention falls into wrong hands, it is likely to be used for commercial gains by dishonest persons, and you may suffer financially. A patent is hence an official and legal permission of use of your invention exclusively for your own commercial gain.
A copyright protects a work from plagiarism. It can stop plagiarism of scripts, musical compositions, or any other type of original creation that is the sole property of the creator. If your firm deals in artistic content like songs and music then marketing of pirated copies of your originals can ruin your business. In the absence of a copyright, any individual can market your original creation or worse, pass it as his own. An owner of copyright is guarded from such eventualities and can even demand compensation for unlawful use.
Similarly, trade secret protection makes sure that some crucial information does not reach your rivals. Effectively protecting a trade secret enables you to score over your business competitors and generate good revenues and profits. Since a trade secret protection is not limited in time, there is no question of its expiry or any requirement for renewal. The secret, if well kept, will go on laying golden eggs for your company for as long as you want.
